What is energy deregulation?

Before deregulation, you had to buy electricity from your local utility, which had a monopoly on electricity sales-no competition. Deregulation opened the energy markets, allowing both businesses and individuals to choose from a variety of suppliers of electricity (and natural gas as well). Choice means competition between suppliers, and competition means lower prices.

How does energy deregulation work?

Energy is created and delivered in 3 phases:

Supply
Transport Center
Local Distributor

Suppliers are the companies responsible for power generation. Transport Centers convey energy from the supplier to the local distributor. The Local Distributor delivers the energy to the customer. It is the first phase, supply, and its concurrent generation cost that is affected by deregulation-to the benefit of the customer kWh rate. With deregulation, you can choose your supplier; before, you had to purchase power from your local provider, with no price shopping possible.

How do I or my business benefit from switching to a deregulated supplier?

The short answer is saving money. By entering the open supplier market, the consumer can choose suppliers offering the lowest rates and the best terms (i.e. multi year fixed pricing). The rate will be significantly lower than the local, non competitive rate your business may be paying today.

Is there any risk involved in switching?

In a word, no. Power at the outlet (or gas at the stove) is still delivered by your local supplier as it has always been. Therefore, there is no difference in the reliability of energy delivery.

Who do I call if there is a problem and will I be treated the same as before?

You call your local supplier, as you always have, who is still responsible for the safe and reliable delivery of energy to your business or home. With the exception of the genera- tion charges, you are their customer as well, and there is still every reason and incentive for them to provide quality service.

Where does my bill come from?

As above, billing does not change. You still pay your current supplier in exactly the same way. Even the meter reader remains the same. The only difference is a line item on the bill listing, the name of your new energy supplier. In reference to “generation costs.†One other difference-your bill will be smaller!

Are these companies reliable?

Yes. We only shop and sell power from the most reliable and well established energy providers. Most of whom have been around since the advent of energy deregulation.
